Sam Rankin, AMS Washington Representative, recently wrote:
" The National Science Board has produced a draft report "Science and Engineering Infrastructure For the 21st Century." One of the recommendations of the report is to increase the share of the NSF budget devoted to S&E infrastructure. The report committee hopes that this increase will be covered through increased appropriations to the NSF. However, if such appropriations don't materialize, the report suggests that NSF increase the share of its budget for infrastructure. Such a budget increase for infrastructure, without an appropriate NSF budget increase, could have negative consequences for core programs, and in particular for mathematics.
The National Science Board (NSB) solicits comments on its draft report. These comments should be received by January 9, 2003 and sent to nsb-inf@nsf.gov. The report can be obtained at www.nsf.gov/nsb."
